Project Description

On September 4, 2007, the Sandy Springs Mayor and Council adopted the master plan for the forthcoming Abernathy Greenway Linear Park-- what will likely become known as Sandy Springs' signature community park.
The plan includes a plaza, patio, gardens, lighted trails, playgrounds-- features that will offer options for youth and adults and for active and passive recreation.
At the same time as the linear park is being developed, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will be undertaking the process of widening Abernathy Road in the areas next to the park. (Note: This is a separate project; PBS&J bears no responsibility for road widening.) The widening project will include the addition of bicycle lanes and sidewalks for easier pedestrian accessibility.
Public Works has been working with the Neighborhood Steering Committee and the consultant, PBS&J, during the months of December, January and February to develop construction plans. A joint Steering Committee and Public Open House was held February 9, 2009. The displays linked below were presented and discussed at that meeting.
Project Status
12/1/2011 - Currently, Public Works is working on 5 phases of the design/construction. Phase I included the initial purchase of the remainder of parcels along Abernathy Road. Phase II included the payment to GDOT for brick paver bands along the sidewalk and for underground utility relocations within the Abernathy section of the park. Phase III is currently under construction utilizing the $750,000 of local funding in the CIP fiscal year 2010 budget. This work will include initial grading, perimeter fencing and perimeter landscaping. Phase IV will be funded through a $700,000 Transportation Enhancement (TE) Grant that is administered through GDOT. This phase will include pedestrian elements such as walkways, parking, lighting and other hardscape items. Construction for Phase IV is anticipated for late winter 2011 after the construction of Phase III is completed. Phase V is currently in the scoping phase of development and will construct additional structures, hardscapes, and landscaping. Phase V will be funded through $500,000 of local funding allocated in the CIP fiscal year 2011 budget.
