Take Your Children Out For National Kids to Parks Day

Children in Sandy Springs can take part in a grassroots movement to reclaim America’s parks through play on Saturday, May 19, 2012, to commemorate the second National Park Trust’s (NPT) National Kids to Parks Day.

City Gauging Public Support for a Potential Park

The City is currently gauging public support for a potential park at the site of the old Fulton County Sewer Plant. The preliminary drawings provide initial concepts. The primary features include a large grassy open field for casual play, surrounded by pervious walking/jogging/biking trails.

North Fulton Golden Games

The Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department will host the 2012 North Fulton Golden Games (NFGG) tennis event at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center. The Tennis Tournament will include men’s and ladies singles and doubles.

Sandy Springs Recreation to Offer Two Acting Workshops

Sandy Springs Recreation continues its commitment to theater programming with two great workshops this summer. Through a partnership with Act Up!, participants will have the opportunity to develop their screenwriting skills or perform on stage.

Sandy Springs Recreation Presents a Spring Showcase

The public is invited to visit Hammond Park Gymnasium and learn about the variety of programs offered by Sandy Springs Recreation. Participants from the Team Gymnastics, Karate, Capoeira, Dance, Music Together and SproTots programs will show off their skills during the hour-long showcase.

SporTots Spring Break Camp and Little Olympian Day Announced

Sandy Springs Recreation will be holding a SporTots Spring Break Camp and Little Olympian Day during April, 2012. These physical exercise programs for preschoolers jump start a healthy lifestyle though active play and social interaction. Your child will learn the basic fundamentals of a variety of sports with an emphasis on motor coordination and growth in spirit, mind and body.

Eggs Go Missing in Sandy Springs!

On March 31, 2012, the City of Sandy Springs will need the help of children to locate eggs during the Annual Sandy Springs Egg Hunt. Children participating in the event will also have the opportunity to explore a fire truck and have their faces painted.

Summer Solstice Stargazing

Look Over The Stars At Morgan Falls Overlook Park! Bring binoculars or your own telescope, if you have them and join the Atlanta Astronomy Club to look at the moon, visible planets and other objects, try out a variety of telescopes, or talk to amateur knowledgeable astronomers about the night sky.

Have you ever wanted to star in a play you helped create? Join us and learn all about theatre by doing it yourself! Children are guided, by the instructor, through a process where they play theater games, create a story, and work together to make that story into a working theatrical production.

Discover the Night Sky Astronomy

Learn about telescopes and the many beautiful sights in the heavens – Planets, Deep Space Objects, Galaxies, Star Clusters – and how to recognize and enjoy them. Each month a guest speaker will present an educational program on a different topic followed by a sky observing session (weather permitting) for those in attendance facilitated by Atlanta Astronomy Club members.

Holiday Hoops 2-On-2 Basketball Skills Challenge Bounces Back To the Court

The Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department is hosting its second annual Holiday Hoops 2-on-2 Basketball Skills Challenge.

The 2-on-2 round robin tournament, free throw competition, and 3-point shooting contest are open to boys and girls attending middle school in grades six through eight.

Students Showcase Talents at Annual Hammond Park Winter Gymnastics Showcase

The City of Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department is hosting its annual Winter Showcase. The event will feature performances by students participating in the artistic and rhythmic gymnastics programs. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with instructors, and learn about additional Recreation and Parks programs. The event is free and open to the public.

Sandy Springs Hosts Special Needs Programs

The Sandy Springs Recreation Department, in partnership with Fulton County Schools, will host two upcoming Special Olympics competitions to provide leisure and athletic opportunities for special needs youth.

3rd Annual Father Daughter Dance

The dance will feature music from both generations geared to the dads or father figures and daughters provided by a live DJ and includes dance contests, musical games, complementary snacks and refreshments, door prizes and a goodie bag for each girl.

Sandy Springs Winter Festival

Bring the whole family for an evening of activities featuring a marshmallow roast, hot cocoa, carnival games, crafts station, inflatables, tiny town cars, kiddie train, “Georgia style” sledding hill and more!

Recreation Program Registration

Winter and Spring Recreation and Parks program registration is in full swing. Online registration begins today, November 1 for the winter programs except for Gymnastics programming which will open registration on November 28.

Recreation Department Seeks Bus Drivers

The City of Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department is seeking bus drivers to transport recration program participants to and from half and full day seasonal off-site activities. The activities will take place during the day, as well as during evening hours and weekends.

2011 Sticks for Kids Excellence Award winner named by program partners

The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) Foundation and Sticks for Kids program partner National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) are proud to announce the recipient of the inaugural Sticks for Kids Excellence Award: Friends of Sandy Springs Foundation in Sandy Springs, Ga.

The award is meant to honor an outstanding junior golf program that has utilized its granted Sticks for Kids program to the fullest potential. That can be accomplished by establishing and growing a junior golf program and using it as an outreach and youth development tool for area youth as well as a means to grow the game.

Cartwheel Workshop Announced

Cartwheels are one of the basic moves in gymnastics. Practicing cartwheels strengthens the upper body and helps in learning later tricks such as round-offs, walkovers, handsprings, and more.

Sandy Springs Recreation is offering a Cartwheel workshop for boys and girls ages 4-6 years-old. The workshop will be held at the Hammond Park Gym on July 30, 2011 from 1:30-3:00 p.m.

Back handspring Workshop for Gymnasts, Tumblers and Cheerleaders

Due to popular demand, there will be another back handspring clinic from 1:30-3:00 p.m. on July 16, 2011. This is a great opportunity for you to learn the basics, special drills and exercises to master or perfect your back handspring. The clinic is open to male and female youths from 8-17 years old, but you must be able to hold a handstand. This is very important, so get practicing!

Talented Coaching Duo Tumbles into Sandy Springs Gymnastics Community

Within five years, the Sandy Springs gymnastics program has grown by leaps and bounds from just 100 participants to in excess of 1,200 and now the coaching staff will see expansion too. The Sandy Springs gymnastics community welcomes husband and wife coaching team Gennadiy (“Coach G”) and Ina Korshunov. The pair joins the existing coaching staff and brings with them a combined 98 years of coaching experience of gymnasts at all skill levels and talents.

“I am thrilled to watch them work with children,” said Marina Davidovich, owner of Sandy Springs Recreation, Inc. “They have something special about them: kindness, genuine love for kids and knowledge of the sport.”

This is a great opportunity for you to learn the basics, special drills and exercises to master or perfect your back handspring. 2011 Summer Pre-School Dance Camps at Hammond Park

The City has added a series of dance camps to the summer program schedule:

July 5-8 - Party In The USA - Celebrate Independence Day and dance to different themes from around the country- Hawaii, California, Texas, Alaska, etc!
July 11-15 - Barbie! - All things Barbie! Barbie songs, Barbie games, Barbie crafts, Barbie dance. Bring your favorite Barbie to camp.
July 18-22 - Cupcakes and Tea - Bring your Teddy Bear, learn table manners, dance (of course), and be FANCY!
July 25-29 - Butterflies and Gardens - Start the week as dancing caterpillars and end the week as beautiful butterflies dancing through the garden. Lots of fun nature games and activities!
August 1-5 - Broadway Babies - Find your spotlight and jazz hands! Annie, The Wizard of Oz, The Lion King….our Broadway list goes on and on!
August 8-12 - Pretty Princess! - Every little girl wants to be a Princess. Come dance like one. Lots of Disney Princess music and games!
August 15-19 - Under The Sea - Summer is winding down. Come to our beach party and dance with Ariel, Nemo, and other undersea friends!

Annual North Fulton Golden Games

The 17th Annual North Fulton Golden Games for mature adults 50+ involves the five North Fulton municipalities (Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton) and Fulton County. Fun competitive games will be hosted throughout the five cities with three events being hosted by the City of Sandy Springs.

Spring Egg Hunt

Sandy Springs Recreation & Parks Department and North Perimeter Optimist Club are organizing a children’s egg hunt this year. The free event is available for Children ages 1-9 years old. Activities that will take place include collecting eggs, playing games, face painting and meeting the Bunny!

Online Registration for Summer Camps Begins March 14

Online registration for the Recreation and Parks Department's summer camps and classes will begins on March 14, 2011. There are summer fun opportunities for all ages: preschool, youth and teens.

Some of the camps offered include: Day Camp, Sports Camp, Art Camp, Introduction to Tennis, Soccer, Gymnastics, Preschool Gymnastics, Mighty Mites, 31 Stories Discover Me, Creative Theatre and Act Up! Drama Camp and Middle School Summer Hangout.

Rhythmic Gymnasts From Across the World to Compete at Tournament in Sandy Springs

Rhythmic gymnasts from around the world will compete at The Star Cup Tournament held February 18-20, 2011 at North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs, Georgia This amazing event will showcase top athletes from Japan, Cyprus, Canada, Ukraine, Russia, U.S.A. and many other countries.

Second Annual Daddy Daughter Dance

The Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department is hosting the Second Annual Daddy Daughter Dance. The Dance will feature music from both generations geared to the dads or father figures and daughters provided by a live DJ and includes dance contests, musical games, complimentary snacks and refreshments, door prizes and a goodie bag for each girl. Attire is business-casual to semi-formal.

Pre-registration is required. Registration begins January 3, 2011 and is accepted on a first-come,first served basis until the event is full or February 4, 2011, whichever comes first.

Spring Track n Field

The program will teach Track and Field skills while enhancing a child’s physical and mental capabilities. Participants will learn the proper fundamentals and techniques of how to run, jump and throw during our track and field program. Track Meets will be on weekends for District and State Georgia Recreation and Parks Association Championships.

If your child enjoys running and jumping, this is the program for him/her!

Youth Baton Program

Are you looking for an activity for your child that’s part sport and part performance? Maybe something that’s different from what everyone else is doing? What about Baton Twirling? Yes, baton twirling is alive and well in Sandy Springs. This program is designed to introduce children to the sport of baton twirling in a secure and fun atmosphere. Baton twirling promotes coordination, dexterity, and a positive self image. It’s also fun and teaches rhythm and teamwork!

Sandy Springs Recreation and Park's Winter Festival

Winter is here, let’s celebrate. Dress warm and enjoy the cold weather with the Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Department. Bring the entire family out for an evening of winter activities featuring a bonfire and marshmallow roast, hot cocoa, carnival games, a crafts station and a “Georgia-style” sledding hill and snow play area.

Up The River Outfitters Paddles into Sandy Springs

Residents can now take advantage of Up the River Outfitters and rent Kayaks and Canoes from the rental station set up at the Morgan Falls River Park. Tubing will be available once the weather gets warmer. Renters can to choose from a 2 hour paddle and a 4 hour paddle both starting at Morgan Falls. The 2 hour paddle will end at Powers Island and the 4 hour paddle will end at Paces Mills. All rental fees include a return shuttle back to Morgan Falls River Park.

The Steering Committee has selected to move forward with the following concepts for Hammond Park:

Morgan Falls Master Park Plan

The Morgan Falls Master Plan has been approved by the City Council with the exception of the River Park area which the Council requested be modified. The revised plans for the River Park were presented to the Council on July 15th.

Update: The Mayor and City Council approved plans for the Overlook Park at Morgan Falls in December of 2008
