About the Sandy Springs Police Department

The Sandy Springs Police cover 37 square miles of residential and commercial area just north of the City of Atlanta. The Sandy Springs Police kicked off police operations on July 1, 2006, taking over for the Fulton County Police who covered the Sandy Springs area since July 1, 1975.

The department has expanded, from its original of 86 sworn officers to its current strength of 125 sworn officers. This represents the commitment to provide the citizens with police coverage comparable to the national average of 1.8 to 2.0 officers per 1000 citizens.

Startup

The Sandy Springs Police Department began in 2004 as a project known as the Sandy Springs Police Task Force consisting of a handful of volunteers working long hours on putting together a police department from the ground up.

In Jan., 2006, Gene Wilson was named as the first Police Chief of the Sandy Springs Police. In early 2006, the department began interviewing and testing police officer candidates from a number of departments metro and statewide. From that process came the first roster of 86 police officers, including uniform, detectives, crime suppression, and support personnel. The foundation for the department would come from the 49 former Fulton County Police officers. They would be given the responsibility of orientating officers, coming from different regions, with the terrain and activity within Sandy Springs.

In October, 2008, Chief Terry Sult was named Chief of Police for Sandy Springs. Chief Sult began his career in Sandy Springs following his retirement from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NC Police and as chief of the Gastonia, NC Police. In January, 2009, Kenneth DeSimone was named deputy chief of police. Deputy Chief DeSimone is the operations commander which includes uniform, investigative, and specialized units. Also under the operations unit is the office of professional standards, training, recruitment, inspections, accreditation, and certification offices.
