City set for one-year birthday celebration
The City of Sandy Springs will celebrate its first birthday on Dec. 1 with the unveiling of a historic plaque and the planting of a time capsule. Leadership Sandy Springs, Heritage Sandy Springs and the City of Sandy Springs are sponsoring the event, which will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Heritage Sandy Springs, 135 Hilderbrand Drive. There will be a lunch, and Mayor Eva Galambos will speak.

Jenkins gets community service award
The Atlanta Regional Commission and the Council on Aging 2005-2006 have selected Councilmember Ashley Jenkins to receive the 2006 Community Service Award based on her advocacy and education efforts. The award honors her work on the Creating Senior Friendly Communities Project. Jenkins received the award Oct. 31 at the 28th Annual Senior Luncheon at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church.

City wins partnership accolades
Sandy Springs, in partnership with CH2M HILL OMI, is the 2006 recipient of the Annual Public-Private Partnership Innovation Award. The National Council for Public-Private Partnerships bestows the award after an intensive process by a group of leading authorities in the field. Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos, City Manager John McDonough and CH2M HILL OMI staff will accept the award at the organization's annual meeting in Alexandria, Va., on Nov. 15.

Governor presents award to police chief
Chief Gene Wilson received the 2006 Governor's Public Safety Award during a ceremony Oct. 18 in the Public Safety Training Center at Forsyth, Ga. Gov. Sonny Perdue presented the honor to public safety officials who have demonstrated dedication and selfless work. Wilson began his police career in 1971 with the Atlanta Police Department. During his career at the DeKalb County (Ga.) Police Department, Wilson graduated from the FBI Academy and was named Police Officer of the Year.

Web site recognized for excellence
The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) honored the City of Sandy Springs Web site with a Bronze Flame Award during the annual 2006 Golden Flame Award ceremony in Atlanta on Oct. 12. The Web site (www.sandyspringsga.org) received recognition from the Atlanta chapter in the Video/Electronic-CD-ROM category. The Atlanta chapter of the IABC presents the annual awards to recognize communications excellence in such categories as print media, electronic media, graphic communications and media relations.

Code Enforcement chief named a '40 Under 40'
Georgia Trend magazine has named Marcus Kellum, Code Enforcement chief, one of its "40 Under 40" in Georgia. Based on 300 nominations, the honor focuses on 40 people under the age of 40 "who will lead our state's commercial, cultural, academic and governmental institutions into the future." The publication recognized Kellum, who is also vice president of the Georgia Association of Code Enforcement, for his major role in getting the Code Enforcement Department operational in the new City.

City Council and other meetings
The Sandy Springs City Council will hold its first meeting this month on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Ordinarily, the regular City Council meetings fall on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, but the elections on Nov. 7 prompted the date change. The City Council will have a regular meeting on Nov. 21 and a work session on Nov. 16.

Nominations begin for humanitarian award
Nominations are open for the new Sandy Springs Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award. The award will go to a person distinguished for humanitarian contributions to society in his or her business, profession, volunteerism or philanthropic life's work. Citizens are asked to nominate a living resident of Sandy Springs who instills pride within the community and inspires others. Current Sandy Springs staff and elected officials are not eligible. The nominee must have been a resident of Sandy Springs for the past three years or longer.
