New Format for Monthly Public Meetings

The City of Sandy Springs will kick off a monthly series of public open house meetings on Feb. 11. The first meeting will take place from 5-7:30 p.m. at Sandy Springs City Hall, and attendees are encouraged to stop in at the time that is most convenient within the scheduled hours. Topics will vary at each meeting depending on their timeliness. Open house meetings will take place monthly on the second Monday of each month, and scheduled dates are listed on the City calendar at www.sandyspringsga.org.

The public should be aware that an input meeting on the Roswell Road streetscape design from Johnson Ferry Road to Abernathy Road will be incorporated into the February meeting. Other topics that will be discussed at the Feb. 11 meeting include:

  • Police Department Crime Statistics--COMPSTAT

  • Fire Department Demonstrations of automated external defibrillator (AED) and CPR training registration

  • Morgan Falls Ball Fields and River Park Master Plans

  • Recreation and Parks Program Information

Tag Renewals Benefit Our City

Every time you renew your license plate, the City of Sandy Springs benefits. From July 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007, the City collected more than $696,797 in revenue from this source. Fulton County collects the fees, on the City’s behalf, for vehicles registered within the City of Sandy Springs and sends it to us on a monthly basis. The split is 50-50. The County assigns Code #55 to Sandy Springs residents—so make sure your statement reflects this when you receive it in the mail at the time of renewal.

Water Meter Replacement Alert

The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management will be making some water meter replacements in Sandy Springs. If your water meter is replaced, please compare the reading on your next bill with your readings from before the replacement. If there is a large discrepancy between your old and new bills, but your water usage has not varied greatly, this could be an error. If you believe that your new bill is incorrect, notify The Atlanta Department of Watershed Management at 404-658-6500.

Mt. Vernon Sidewalk Progress Continues

Construction is underway on the Mt Vernon Parkway Sidewalk and Traffic Calming Project. Since starting the work on January 2, 2008, new curb, gutter and sidewalks have already been installed at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Parkway and Crest Valley Drive. This project, which significantly improves pedestrian safety by installing a sidewalk along the eastern length of Mt. Vernon Parkway, is scheduled for completion in Spring 2008. Be advised to expect traffic delays on Mt. Vernon Parkway during construction.

Help Stamp out Smoking-Related Fires

Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths in the United States. From hot ashes dumped into garbage bins to cigarettes falling onto couch cushions, carelessly discarded smoking materials result in fires that kill hundreds of people every year.

You can help prevent these types of fires by reminding your friends and family members to follow these smoking safety tips.

  • Never smoke in bed or when tired.

  • Run ashes and cigarette butts under water before throwing them away.

  • Use ashtrays with a wide and stable base.

  • Put out cigarettes in an ashtray or a can filled with sand.

  • Check for cigarette butts under sofa cushions and on and behind furniture.

  • Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used.

  • Use fire-safe cigarettes that are less likely to cause fires.

  • Make sure your cigarette is fully out, especially if you are under the influence of medicine or alcohol.
