Don't Block the Box

Don't Block the Box

If you drive along Riverside Drive and Riverside Parkway, Sandy Springs officials want you to know, “Don’t Block the Box.” This weekend, the city will begin testing a new traffic control system at that intersection.

“‘Don’t Block the Box’ is a system where an intersection is clearly marked to remind drivers to keep that intersection clear, especially as traffic comes to a stop. Commuters along Riverside Parkway who need to turn onto Riverside Drive know the challenge faced when Riverside Drive fills up, especially during rush hour. Keeping that ‘box’ open should provide vehicles on Riverside Parkway an opportunity to turn onto Riverside Drive and enter the traffic flow,” said Sandy Springs City Manager John McDonough.

Under the new system, a white box will be outlined on Riverside Drive, including the words “Do Not Block.” Traffic signs will also be posted as a reminder for drivers along Riverside Drive to keep the marked space open as traffic comes to a stop.

Public Works Director Kevin Walter said, “The opening left on Riverside Drive can then be filled by vehicles turning onto Riverside Drive from Riverside Parkway. Currently, those travelers typically face a long wait as traffic gridlocks.”

The city considered a number of options to help keep traffic moving at that intersection. A combination of factors, including the proximity to Heards Ferry Road and issues with visibility along the Riverside Drive called for an “ouside the box” solution.

The new striping will be painted on Riverside Drive on Saturday, Dec. 10. Once completed, commuters along Riverside Drive will be expected to keep the boxed area open as traffic comes to a stop. Sandy Springs Police Department officers will be monitoring the area and providing educational reminders as commuters adjust to the new system.

“Our best advice to drivers would be not to enter the intersection unless you know you can immediately continue to the other side,” added Walter.
